Replace Your Roof: How To Know When It’s Time

How To Know When It’s Time To Replace Your Roof

Maintaining your roof is an essential component to maintaining the comfort and safety of your entire home. Older roofs can fail or show obvious signs of needing replacement, but how do you know when it’s the right time to replace your roof?

Replace Your Roof

Start Inside

Before you inspect the exterior of your home, head to the attic and look for some of the signs of an aging roof.

Sunlight or Water Coming Through Your Roof Boards

If you can see sunlight through the boards of your roof, this could indicate that the materials that are holding your roof together are failing. It could also mean that your roof is losing its weatherproofing properties as well, and it is time to replace your roof.

Temperature Difference Between the Attic and Outside Air

Your home is designed to circulate air in and out of the attic area. If your attic is warmer than the outside air, your home may be prone to ice dams, which can strain your roof’s structural integrity.

Inspect Your Roof

Outside, you should inspect your roof’s shingles. If you notice any of the following, it may be time to consider a roof replacement!

Missing or Curled Shingles

Obviously, missing shingles need to be replaced. But you may also notice that your shingles are starting to curl. This damage can happen from wind or moisture. Once it happens, those shingles will need to be replaced.

Dark Streaks and Stains

Dark streaks and stains can be a sign of algae growth. The moisture associated with this growth can eat away at your shingles and damage your roof.

Shingles Are Missing Granules

If your shingles are missing their natural granules—or if you notice those granules building up in your gutters—your roof could be losing its weatherproofing properties.

Look to Your Neighbors

If your roof is more than 10 years old, it may be a good time for a thorough inspection. If you’re unsure of your roof’s age, your neighbors might offer a valuable clue. Homes in a neighborhood are typically constructed around the same time. If you see your neighbors fixing their roofs, it may be a sign that you replace your roof.
