Post-Construction Checklist
Having home renovations professionally done should be a stress-free process. Your contractor should work with you on design, perform the work in a timely manner, and leave the work site as clean as possible. For the most part, you don’t have to do much during or after your remodel. However, there are a few things you should check during your walkthrough with the contractor.
The Walkthrough
Your contractor should offer to do a walkthrough with you of the renovated space. During this walkthrough you want to check out all of the work your contractor did and pay attention to the details. Make sure that hardware is correctly installed, faucets and drains work, and light switches and fixtures function normally.
The Cleanup
Your contractor will do their best to clean up after themselves, but you should still thoroughly clean the area before using it, especially if it was your kitchen that was remodeled. Clean everything with disinfectant, polish wood with an appropriate, oil-based cleaner, and sweep and mop thoroughly.
To help make sure you don’t miss anything, here is a simple checklist that would apply for a kitchen remodel:
- Vacuum upholstery and carpets in nearby rooms. (Dust from construction tends to find its way here.)
- Wipe down everything from high to low.
- Clean inside cabinets and add shelf paper, if you so choose.
- Vacuum, sweep, and mop all floors and floor coverings in your home. (Construction dust can be tracked throughout your home.)
